Brihuega, in La Alcarria and close to the A-2 via Torija, is known for its walls and above all for the lavender fields around it. In July, with the lavender in bloom, the access roads and tracks between the fields fill with visitors.

On arrival: La Alcarria

La Alcarria is the upland of plateaus and valleys east of the capital, known for honey, lavender and historic towns such as Brihuega and Pastrana. It has few residents and plenty of weekend tourism, especially in summer, and its people rely on Guadalajara for the hospital and the train.

When demand peaks

• Lavender bloom in Brihuega (July): With the lavender in bloom, Brihuega gets visitors all month, with the lavender festival as the busiest day. Sunset visits end late and the tracks between the fields have no public transport.

Tip: If you are leaving from Sigüenza, Molina or a village in La Alcarria, give the exact address and a phone number: in small villages and housing estates there is not always an obvious pickup point.
