The south-west — the capital and the Henares corridor with Azuqueca, Alovera and Cabanillas — sits right next to Madrid, grows fast and lives from logistics and daily commuting to Alcalá, Madrid and Barajas. The rest — La Alcarria, the Sierra Norte, Sigüenza and the Señorío de Molina — is a vast, thinly populated territory where trains and buses are scarce and the hospital or station is a long way off.
The capital and the towns around it — Marchamalo, Cabanillas del Campo, Yunquera de Henares and Chiloeches — form a continuous area along the Henares valley. This is where the University Hospital, the commuter-rail station and the province's services are, with the high-speed station close by in Yebes.
Azuqueca de Henares, Alovera and Villanueva de la Torre are the Guadalajara end of the Henares corridor: large logistics parks alongside the A-2 and new neighbourhoods of people who work in Madrid or Alcalá. Warehouse shifts and early flights mean plenty of trips at odd hours.
El Casar and Torrejón del Rey, in the countryside on the west of the province, grew with housing estates of detached homes lived in by families who work in Madrid. The settlements are spread out, with little internal public transport, so almost every trip starts by car.
La Alcarria is the upland of plateaus and valleys east of the capital, known for honey, lavender and historic towns such as Brihuega and Pastrana. It has few residents and plenty of weekend tourism, especially in summer, and its people rely on Guadalajara for the hospital and the train.
Sigüenza, a cathedral city with a castle, is the hub of the north of the province, a cold and sparsely populated area reaching the border with Soria. It has a station on the conventional Madrid–Zaragoza line, but with few trains a day, and its reference hospital is in Guadalajara.
The Señorío de Molina, at the eastern edge of the province and bordering Teruel, is one of the least populated areas in Spain. Molina de Aragón, with its great fortress, is the service centre of an area for which the city of Guadalajara is a long way off.

Guadalajara is the Castilla-La Mancha provincial capital closest to Barajas: {{ruta:guadalajara-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} along the A-2, about {{ruta:guadalajara-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:min}} without traffic, and without crossing Madrid. Even so there is no direct train: Cercanías C-2 reaches Chamartín, where you change to the C-1 or C-10 for T4, a total of around an hour and a quarter; the bus drops you at Avenida de América, from where the metro and the airport's 200 bus run. For pre-dawn flights or with luggage, the transfer with a driver from {{ruta:guadalajara-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:precio}} is the only door-to-door option at any hour.
Guadalajara has two stations that must not be confused. The Cercanías station is in the city; the high-speed station, Guadalajara-Yebes, is in the municipality of Yebes, beside the Valdeluz estate, {{ruta:guadalajara-a-estacion-ave-guadalajara:km}} from the centre and with hardly any public transport. Trains on the Madrid–Zaragoza–Barcelona line pass through it, and only some stop: Avant services and certain AVE trains to Madrid, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona and Barcelona. The Guadalajara end of the Henares corridor — Azuqueca, Alovera, Cabanillas del Campo, Villanueva de la Torre, Chiloeches — is one of Spain's largest logistics hubs, beside the A-2 and {{ruta:azuqueca-de-henares-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}} from Barajas. Cercanías C-2 stops at Azuqueca and Guadalajara, but the warehouses are far from the stations and the six-in-the-morning and ten-at-night changeovers fall outside useful bus hours. Companies handle shifts with fixed car-and-driver services and visitor and management trips with a business account, monthly invoicing and cost centres.
You reach Sigüenza without a car on Renfe's medium-distance train from Madrid-Chamartín, which stops at Guadalajara and continues towards Soria or Zaragoza, in a little under an hour and a half from Madrid and under an hour from Guadalajara, with few departures a day; in spring and autumn the Medieval Train also runs, with entertainment on board and a guided visit. From the station, the medieval old town is ten minutes uphill on foot. What Sigüenza lacks is transport to get around the Serranía or to come back late: from Guadalajara it is {{ruta:guadalajara-a-siguenza:km}} and the transfer with a driver costs from {{ruta:guadalajara-a-siguenza:precio}}; from Barajas, {{ruta:siguenza-a-aeropuerto-madrid-barajas:km}}.
Guadalajara University Hospital is in the capital, on Calle Donante de Sangre, and it is the reference hospital for an enormous province: from Azuqueca it is {{ruta:azuqueca-de-henares-a-hospital-guadalajara:km}}, from Sigüenza {{ruta:siguenza-a-hospital-guadalajara:km}} and from Molina de Aragón {{ruta:molina-de-aragon-a-hospital-guadalajara:km}}, and from the villages of La Alcarria, the Serranía and the Señorío no bus reaches a nine o'clock appointment. Referred specialities go to the Príncipe de Asturias in Alcalá or to Madrid's large hospitals. A pre-booked transfer drops you at the outpatient entrance, collects you on the way out and avoids the car park, which fills early.
The Campiña in western Guadalajara — El Casar, Torrejón del Rey, Uceda and their estates of detached houses — is home to families who work in Madrid and live with no internal public transport: the settlements are scattered, the bus to Madrid goes through the town centre infrequently and there is no train. A Spanish private hire vehicle may only carry out pre-booked services: it cannot pick up passengers in the street or wait at ranks. That is why everything goes through advance booking, with the price fixed before the trip and the service paperwork issued beforehand.
