Sigüenza, a cathedral city with a castle, is the hub of the north of the province, a cold and sparsely populated area reaching the border with Soria. It has a station on the conventional Madrid–Zaragoza line, but with few trains a day, and its reference hospital is in Guadalajara.

Which way it goes

The A-2 crosses the province towards Aragon: it leads to Zaragoza, and at Medinaceli it connects with the A-15 to Soria. Cuenca is reached to the south-east on the N-320 across La Alcarria, while Segovia and Toledo lie on the far side of Madrid, so the usual route skirts the capital on its ring roads.

Soria lies to the north, along the A-2 to Medinaceli and then the A-15. It is a family and work trip for the north of the province, which shares landscape, climate and depopulation with Soria.

On arrival: Soria y su tierra

The city of Soria, on the banks of the Duero, holds the hospital, the station, the province's services and a large share of its population. It is where people come from far-flung villages for appointments and paperwork, and where most trips to Madrid, Zaragoza and Logroño begin.

Tip: From the corridor to Barajas the drive is short, but the A-2 between Alcalá and Torrejón jams at rush hour: for morning flights it is better to leave before it starts.
