From Guadalajara to Barajas airport: the Castilla-La Mancha capital closest to the plane

Guadalajara is the Castilla-La Mancha provincial capital closest to Barajas: 50 km along the A-2, about 40 min without traffic, and without crossing Madrid. Even so there is no direct train: Cercanías C-2 reaches Chamartín, where you change to the C-1 or C-10 for T4, a total of around an hour and a quarter; the bus drops you at Avenida de América, from where the metro and the airport's 200 bus run. For pre-dawn flights or with luggage, the transfer with a driver from 79,65 € is the only door-to-door option at any hour.

Why is Barajas so handy from Guadalajara?

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport lies north-east of Madrid, right beside the A-2 and between the M-40 and the M-50. Guadalajara and the Henares corridor sit on that very same motorway, beyond Alcalá and Torrejón: the way to the airport does not enter Madrid, it leaves the A-2 at the M-14 junction (terminals T1, T2 and T3) or continues to the M-12 for T4. It is the only corridor in Castilla-La Mancha for which Barajas is "on the way".

What changes the timing is one specific stretch: the A-2 between Alcalá de Henares and Torrejón de Ardoz, which clogs between seven and half past nine in the morning towards Madrid and between six and eight in the evening towards Guadalajara. The R-2 toll road runs parallel and is usually empty; it joins the M-50 near the airport.

How does Cercanías work: the C-2 and the change at Chamartín?

Guadalajara station, in the city, is the terminus of Cercanías Madrid line C-2, which stops at Azuqueca de Henares, Alcalá and Torrejón and reaches Chamartín in a little under an hour. At Chamartín you change to the C-1 or the C-10, which reach the "Aeropuerto T4" station in just over ten minutes. With the wait for the change and the walk through T4, allow an hour and a quarter from Guadalajara and an hour from Azuqueca; it is the most sensible public option, provided the flight leaves from T4 and at a time when trains run.

If the flight leaves from T1, T2 or T3, Aena's free shuttle bus between terminals takes about fifteen minutes more from T4. And the usual limit: the first Cercanías of the morning is no use for a flight boarding before eight, and at night the last train back to Guadalajara leaves before the late flights land. Timetables are at renfe.com and change; check the day's.

And by bus?

The intercity buses from Guadalajara and the corridor to Madrid arrive at the Avenida de América interchange in the north-east of the city along the A-2, very frequently in working hours. From Avenida de América to the airport there are two ways: EMT line 200, a city bus going straight to terminals T1, T2 and T3 (and T4 depending on the section) in about twenty-five minutes, or metro line 6 to Nuevos Ministerios and line 8 to the airport. All in, around two hours from Guadalajara with luggage.

It is the cheapest option and the one most dependent on A-2 and M-30 traffic. At dawn and on holidays the intercity frequency drops sharply; for those hours it is not a reliable option.

Your own car and parking, or a transfer?

By car it is 50 km and 40 min without traffic on the A-2 (or the R-2 toll road if the A-2 is busy). Aena has car parks at each terminal, a long-stay one with a shuttle and advance booking at aena.es; for two or three days your own car works out well, for a week parking plus tolls approaches or exceeds the cost of a return transfer, and you have to drive at dawn on the way out and tired on the way back.

The transfer with a driver collects at your address — Guadalajara, Marchamalo, Cabanillas, Azuqueca, Alovera, El Casar — and drops you at the right terminal, at any hour, with the price fixed when you book: from 79,65 € for the capital, 64,76 € from Azuqueca and 59,70 € from El Casar. For a pickup at Barajas you book with the flight number; the airport page explains the pickup conditions, provided with Madrid partners and capacity.

What time do you need to leave Guadalajara for a flight?

The airline's margin (two hours for European flights, three for long haul as a reference), plus 40 min of travel, plus twenty minutes for the Alcalá–Torrejón stretch and ten for the pickup. For an eight o'clock morning flight to Europe the Guadalajara pickup falls at around five; for an eleven o'clock flight, around eight, right in the rush hour, when the traffic margin gets fully used. From Sigüenza or Molina de Aragón the trip is much longer — 124 km and 189 km — and in winter add margin for ice on the first stretch.
