Madrid from Guadalajara and the Henares Corridor: IFEMA, Parque Warner, concerts, the Estación Sur and the hospitals

Guadalajara and the Henares Corridor enter Madrid from the east, the same side where IFEMA, the Metropolitano stadium and the airport are. From Guadalajara city to IFEMA it is 51 km, about 39 min on the A-2, with transfers from 74,72 €; to the Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro, 60 km, from 84,71 €. Parque Warner is on the far side of Madrid and, like the stadiums and hospitals, has its own page that calculates the price from each town. Commuter trains and buses work by day and without bulky bags; a car with a driver covers trade-fair equipment, children, small-hours returns and appointments, with the price fixed before booking.

Why does Guadalajara have an advantage for some Madrid destinations and a disadvantage for others?

The A-2 reaches Madrid from the north-east, passing Alcalá de Henares and Torrejón de Ardoz, and the R-2 toll road comes in from the north towards the M-40. That puts Guadalajara and the Corridor towns, such as Azuqueca de Henares, Alovera or Cabanillas del Campo, very close to the destinations in the east of the city: IFEMA and the Metropolitano stadium sit next to the M-40, on the same side you enter from, with no need to cross the centre. Southern destinations work the other way round. The Estación Sur at Méndez Álvaro, 12 de Octubre hospital or Parque Warner, in San Martín de la Vega, mean skirting Madrid on the M-40 or M-50, and there the ring road's traffic weighs more than the kilometres. The same province, then, has IFEMA close by and Parque Warner far away.

Public transport has three different arrival points. The C-2 commuter line leaves from Guadalajara station, in the city, and stops at Alcalá before reaching Atocha and Chamartín; the AVE stops outside town, at Yebes station, and runs to Madrid's stations; and the intercity bus almost always arrives at the Avenida de América interchange. None of the three drops you at the door of the five destinations in this guide, so you always have to add the metro or a second train. For someone leaving from the city and travelling light it is a comfortable trip. For someone living in El Casar, Torrejón del Rey or a housing estate with no station, the first leg to the train is already a car journey, and for Sigüenza or Molina de Aragón, with few trains and long distances, the direct car is often the only way to go and come back in a day.

How do you get to IFEMA from the Henares Corridor with trade-fair equipment?

The Corridor's industrial estates work in logistics, distribution and manufacturing, and many of their companies exhibit at or visit shows at IFEMA. For a one-day visitor, the commuter train to Chamartín or the bus to Avenida de América followed by the metro works well. For an exhibitor, with boxes of samples, screens and roll-up banners, a car that loads at the warehouse and unloads at the exhibitor entrance is simpler than any combination of trains. From Azuqueca de Henares to IFEMA it is 39 km, a short trip on the A-2 that only gets complicated in the morning rush between Alcalá and Torrejón; when set-up opens early it is worth fixing the pickup before that jam starts. From Sigüenza, the same fair means 123 km and a pre-dawn departure.

Because IFEMA sits right next to the airport, the two destinations are often combined in the same trip: the colleague flying into Barajas for the fair, the client who visits the stand and then wants to see the warehouse in Cabanillas or Alovera, or the team returning from a conference who drop one of their number at the terminal. Each trip has its fixed price, the airport pickup is made with a sign in arrivals and the return from the hall is set for closing time and adjusted with a message if breakdown runs on. When the fair lasts several days, Corridor businesses can bring all those trips together in a business account with a single monthly invoice, with one line per service that makes the expense easy to justify.

How do you plan a day at Parque Warner with children from Guadalajara?

Parque Warner is in San Martín de la Vega, south-east of Madrid, and from Guadalajara it is in practice the furthest destination in this guide: you have to go down the A-2 and skirt the city on the M-40 or M-50, or find the link with the A-3 heading south. By public transport the trip chains the commuter train or bus into Madrid with another journey to the park, which is hard to sustain with small children and pushchairs for a whole day. In your own car, the drive home comes at the end of the day, when the adults are tired and the park's car park empties all at once through the same exits. As there is no published route from each Corridor town to the park, the Parque Warner page calculates the price from the pickup address.

For a family from Villanueva de la Torre or Marchamalo, the practical thing is to book outbound and return in the same transaction, with the return pickup set for the park's closing time. When booking you give the passengers, the children's ages and heights for the child seats, which traffic rules require for minors according to their height, and whether you are taking pushchairs, so a vehicle with enough boot space is assigned. The price is per vehicle, so two families travelling together share it. On the way back the children usually fall asleep before reaching the A-2 and nobody has to drive drowsy. On high-season weekends, during school holidays and at Christmas it is worth booking early, because everyone leaves the park within a very short time and demand piles up on those dates.

How do you get back to Guadalajara from an evening concert or match?

The Metropolitano stadium is in the east of Madrid, next to the M-40, and from the Corridor it is almost a local trip; the Bernabéu, on the Castellana, and the arena on Avenida de Felipe II are further into the city, and concerts are also held at IFEMA. The problem is not getting there but getting out: thousands of people leave the venue at once, the metro fills up and the last commuter train or bus to Guadalajara may already have gone, especially if the match ends late or the concert runs on. Going in your own car means finding parking far from the stadium, bearing in mind Madrid's low-emission zones, whose conditions the City Council publishes on its website, and driving in the small hours after hours on your feet.

With the return booked before the event, you agree a specific pickup point, a junction a few streets from the stadium and outside the traffic closure, because stopping at the gate is impossible when the crowd comes out. If there is extra time or an encore, a message is enough to move the time. A group of friends from Azuqueca or Cabanillas pays a single price per vehicle, and from the east of Madrid the return along the A-2 is direct. From Guadalajara, central Madrid is 59 km away, and the events page calculates the price from each venue. For someone living in Sigüenza or the Serranía, where no public transport is left in the small hours, a booked return is the difference between sleeping at home or in a Madrid hotel.

When does it make sense to go from Guadalajara to the Estación Sur coach station?

Buses between Guadalajara and Madrid do not arrive at the Estación Sur but at Avenida de América, so Méndez Álvaro only enters the trip when you need to connect with a long-distance coach to the south, the west or Portugal, which leave from there. To get there by public transport from the Corridor you have to cross Madrid: commuter train to Atocha and another train or metro line 6 to Méndez Álvaro, with the luggage of a long trip in tow. The car from home skirts the city on the M-40 and drops you at the terminal door, which pays off above all with pre-dawn departures, large suitcases or older people travelling alone. From Molina de Aragón the Estación Sur is 197 km away, and there is no way to connect first thing without a car.

Arrivals are the other case. A relative coming to spend a few days in Brihuega, Pastrana or Sigüenza on a long-distance coach that pulls into Méndez Álvaro at night has no connection to the province until the next morning, and the station has several exits where it is easy to get lost. The transfer is booked in their name, with their phone number, and the driver waits at the agreed exit; the person paying receives the confirmation and the fixed price. If the coach is late, the pickup time is adjusted with a message. When the traveller is not arriving on a long-distance coach but on a train or a flight, the Estación Sur makes no sense as a meeting point: the transfer is booked directly from Atocha, Chamartín or the airport terminal.

How do you plan an appointment at a Madrid hospital from Guadalajara province?

Guadalajara University Hospital is the province's reference hospital, and for some specialities patients are referred to hospitals in Alcalá or Madrid, on top of appointments with insurers and private clinics. From the A-2, the hospitals in the north and east can be reached without crossing the centre: Ramón y Cajal and La Paz are off the M-40, and Gregorio Marañón is reached by coming in along Avenida de América. 12 de Octubre and the Fundación Jiménez Díaz, by contrast, are in the south and west, and from the Corridor they mean crossing the city at rush hour. By public transport, a first-thing appointment means commuter train, metro and the corridors of a large hospital. The hospitals page calculates the price from the starting town to the specific hospital and building.

The transfer is booked as outbound, wait and return, with the wait during the appointment or the pickup time agreed before setting off. For someone coming from La Alcarria, the Serranía or the Señorío de Molina, an appointment in Madrid takes up the whole day, and leaving home with the car at the door avoids chaining the bus to Guadalajara, the train and the metro. A companion does not change the price as long as they fit in the vehicle, and the booking can be made by a relative in another city, with the traveller's phone number. This service is not medical transport: it carries no medical staff or equipment. If the patient needs to travel lying down or under supervision, the transport is prescribed by the doctor and organised by SESCAM. Wheelchairs that do not fold need the adapted vehicle, which is requested in advance.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Guadalajara to IFEMA by car?

About 39 min on the A-2 without incidents, for 51 km. In the morning rush the stretch between Alcalá and Torrejón adds time, and the pickup is set with that in mind.

From El Casar, does a car with a driver to IFEMA pay off?

If you are carrying equipment or coming back late, yes: El Casar has no station and the first leg would already be by car. From El Casar to IFEMA it is 40 km via the R-2 or the A-1, with the price fixed before booking.

Does the Guadalajara bus stop at the Estación Sur?

No: it arrives at Avenida de América. The Estación Sur only matters for connecting with a long-distance coach; for that, the car from home skirts Madrid on the M-40 and avoids crossing the city with your luggage.

Can you wait at the Metropolitano gate when the match ends?

Stopping at the gate is impossible when the crowd comes out, so a junction a few streets away, outside the traffic closure, is agreed. If the match runs on, a message is enough to adjust the time.

Can I book the transfer to La Paz for my father, who lives in Sigüenza?

Yes. Give his name, phone number, exact address and the building of the appointment; the outbound trip, the wait and the return are agreed beforehand. If he needs care during the journey, what applies is the medical transport prescribed by the doctor.
