Azuqueca, Alovera and the Henares corridor to Madrid without a car: what the Cercanías does well, what it does not reach (Barajas, the nights) and what a car with a driver costs

For commuting to Alcalá or Madrid, the C-2 Cercanías from Azuqueca or Guadalajara is hard to beat: it stops at Alcalá, Torrejón, Chamartín and Atocha and runs every few minutes at peak times. What the train does not do is reach Barajas without a change, leave before dawn for a flight, come back in the small hours or pick you up in Alovera, Villanueva de la Torre or the new estates, which have no station. That is what a fixed-price car with a driver is for: Azuqueca to the airport is 38 km and about 34 min along the A-2 without entering Madrid, and the traveller sets the time.

What does the Cercanías do well in the corridor?

Madrid Cercanías line C-2 links Guadalajara with Chamartín and Atocha via Azuqueca de Henares, Alcalá de Henares, Torrejón and San Fernando, and at peak times trains run every few minutes. For anyone living in Azuqueca or the capital and working in Alcalá, Torrejón or central Madrid it is the cheapest and most reliable way to commute every day, with no A-2 jams and no parking. The Madrid transport consortium's monthly pass covers the Guadalajara zone with its own fare, and Azuqueca station has a park-and-ride for those coming from the surrounding towns.

There are also intercity buses between Guadalajara, Azuqueca, Alcalá and Madrid along the A-2 to the Avenida de América interchange, useful for neighbourhoods far from the station and on days with problems on the line. Between the two, the corridor is better served than any other district of Castilla-La Mancha, and this guide does not try to talk anyone out of the train.

What does not reach: Barajas, the small hours and the housing estates?

First, the airport. Barajas is half an hour from the corridor along the A-2 and the M-14, but by public transport you have to go to Chamartín or Nuevos Ministerios and come back out to the airport on Cercanías C-1 or the metro, with luggage: a long hour and a half for a trip that by car never enters Madrid. Second, the hours: the first Cercanías is no use for a seven o'clock flight or a six o'clock shift at a Madrid hospital, and the last one does not wait for anyone leaving a dinner or a concert.

Third, the corridor's own geography: Alovera, Villanueva de la Torre, Cabanillas del Campo, Chiloeches and Azuqueca's new estates have no station, and getting to one early or back from it at night is the weak link. A car with a driver to Azuqueca or Guadalajara station, booked for the train time, is the short connection that makes the Cercanías a real option for those neighbourhoods.

What does a car with a driver cost, and which way does it go?

The figures are the route engine's and you see them before booking. From Azuqueca de Henares to Barajas airport, 38 km and about 34 min, from 64,76 €; from Alovera to Barajas, 42 km from 69,91 €; from Azuqueca to Atocha, 48 km and about 40 min; from Villanueva de la Torre to Chamartín, 44 km.

To the airport you take the A-2 to Torrejón and then the M-14 or M-12 straight to the terminals, without touching the M-40 unless necessary; the stretch that jams is Alcalá to Torrejón between seven and nine in the morning, and the driver allows for it in the departure time. To Atocha and the centre you enter via the A-2 and the M-30, or the R-2 toll road when the A-2 is heavy. At night everything is empty and the times are the engine's.

When does it make sense to order one, and when not?

Not for the daily office commute, which the train does better and cheaper. Yes for the early flight or the late arrival at Barajas with luggage; for the shift that starts before the first train or ends after the last; for the appointment at a Madrid hospital with an elderly relative who does not want to change trains; for the group of three or four splitting the fare from an estate with no station; and for the late return from a concert, a dinner or a match, booked with an approximate time and confirmed by message when you finish.

For trips that repeat — the weekly appointment, picking up the children from an activity in Alcalá, the fixed connection with the six o'clock train — the service can be left fixed with the same driver, time and price. Minors can travel alone if the person booking says so, and child seats and pets are mentioned when booking.
